The best option for heating homes during the winter is wood pellets, which are well known and widely used by homeowners in their pellet stoves. Pellets are made with sawdust from the wood processing industry (furniture, pallets, lumber, etc.).

Good pellets meet quality and environmental standards such as DIN+ and EN+. There are also some local standards, such as the Royal Decree (in Belgium), which is more strict on the absence of chemicals and some more parameters.

Be aware that products that at least supplier has to provide for your analysis by a local lab to confirm quality and avoid such problems as more ash, vitrification of ash, clogging with dust, etc.

The typical combustion heat is somewhere between 14.4 and 20 MJ/kg.

Pellets' main characteristics:

  • Content of ash. It's better if it's under 10%.
  • Amount of dust.
  • Moisture level. Better at around 10%.

The usual volume of wood pellets that you need per year for heating your house is about 2-3 tons per year. Here you will find more decent calculations.

Its consumption will depend on:

  • Based on the size and insulation of the room you want to heat
  • The duration of heating
  • The desired temperature.

Wood pellets in big bags cost around 350 EUR per ton, while 15 kg packs cost around 380 EUR per ton. FCA loading location: Istanbul
